A Real Life Example of a Job Search with Age Discrimination

This post is a case study of how one of my clients, Deidre, used my job search strategies to land her dream job while feeling like she was battling age discrimination and feeling frustrated.

Deidre made no bones about it when she joined us at the Job Search School. She was in a low place in her life and there were days when she just didn’t have it in her. Those were days where she wished she could stay in bed with the covers over her head. 

She had reached this low point after applying for job after job that she found on the online job boards. She wasn’t hearing anything back and she was attributing that to age discrimination since she was 57 years old. What else could it be?

Deidre had paid hundreds of dollars to have her resume written by a professional resume writer. So, it certainly couldn’t be the resume, she thought. She knew she was well-qualified for the positions she was applying for. She had the experience, the talent and the skills for the Human Resource Management positions she was applying for.

As the months ticked by, this was putting a strain on her family and their finances. She had to find work and realized that she needed help. Deidre found The Job Search School on You Tube and made the commitment to join the program.

Deidre loved the accountability and structure she discovered through the new job search plan that The Job Search School provided. She especially found the live weekly scheduled Q&A call motivating and helpful. Her outlook grew more and more positive. 

She learned not to assume that a professional resume writer is the answer to having a resume that will actually make it past the ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). Deidre also learned that it was a huge waste of money to hire a resume writer because not only do you have to have a great base resume, but you need to customize and tailor a resume for every job you apply for. She learned how to do that easily and quickly with The Job Search School training. And as soon as she did, she started to get calls for interviews.

So, maybe it wasn’t age discrimination after all?

A Real Life Example of Getting the Resume Past the ATS

This post is a case study of how one of my clients, Robert G., used my job search strategies to land his dream job while transitioning from a VP of Operations to a COO dream position.

After attending the free Job Search Master Class that I offer and becoming a client of the Job Search School, Robert let me know just how hopeful he was about my program. He shared what he had been experiencing in his job search up to the point of finding my services. 

Robert had been let go as a Senior VP of Operations when his company was acquired by a bigger corporation. He was certain throughout the transition, that his leadership, corporate visions, and knowledge would secure his place within the company under new ownership. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Robert’s first approach was to set up some golf dates at the club hoping to get some time to pick the brains of some of the affluent business members in his community. He had some great conversations over the golf course and got the word out that he was looking for a new position. But no one was biting, no real leads came his way. 

Next, he checked the newspapers for any job postings, but the papers and their job sections were skeletal. He then set out to start an online job search. Robert quickly became overwhelmed with exactly what to do on the internet as he had never done a job search online. He spent hour after hour just bouncing around on the internet trying to research the job search but never came up with a clear plan as to what to do. Several months went by and he became more and more frustrated.

When his eldest daughter came to visit, she told him he needed to post his resume on the online job boards. He soon had resumes on Indeed, Monster, Glassdoor, and many accounts on other various job boards. 

He jumped through hoops, sending out resume after resume, hearing nothing back. Then his daughter told him about an ad she saw for job seekers on Facebook. It was an ad promoting my free webinar and the topic was “The Top 3 Strategies That Are Working in Today’s Job Market”. She registered him for the free online class and he learned all about the online job search. 

Robert signed on as a client and we helped him to get his resume and LinkedIn profile in tip top shape, and most importantly, made them ATS-proof (Applicant Tracking System). We taught him the strategies that are working today for his job title and industry. It was a game-changer for him.

While working with Robert, we showed him that at the Executive level, he needed to spend most of his job search time working in what is called the “Hidden Job Market”. That refers to jobs that are not posted on the online job boards which includes many of the higher-level jobs that are usually never posted. Companies use talent agencies and recruiters to find the top candidates. We taught him how to uncover the positions, how to contact those responsible for the position and coached him on how to take that next step up the corporate ladder from VP to COO.

Within 4 months, Robert had 3 job offers that he, himself, admitted he would have never had if he had not been made aware of the hidden job market and our job search strategies. He says, “Tammy’s methods and strategies work, bottom line, and I am glad to say she was the light at the end of a very dark tunnel. I now have the job I dreamed of and I am grateful to her.”

A Real Life Example of an Executive Job Search

This post is about how my client, Tony, overcame the Applicant Tracking Software that weeds out applicants and scores the resume. 

“987 resumes sent!! 987!” That is the number of resumes Tony C. said he had sent by the time he learned about the Job Search School and me, a career strategist. For all of that effort, Tony had only had 3 interviews in 3 months’ time. 

His phone wasn’t ringing. His resume was lost in the black hole of recruiting as we say at the Job Search School. This means his resume was not scoring well enough with the ATS. He just wasn’t getting much in the way of calls to interview. 

His job search was not going like any job search he had embarked on in the past. Applying online was not the way he wished his job search had to go. He was applying for anything and everything he came across.  We call this “spraying and praying”. His faith in himself was dwindling and fear of not getting back to work was disrupting his sleep at night. 

It wasn’t anything personal against Tony. It was the fact that his resume was not doing the job of selling him like it was meant to do. It wasn’t even getting in front of a real human being with the power to hire him. 

I was glad to help him to turn his situation around. He found out about my Job Search School program on LinkedIn through one of my posts about the free webinar training I offers to job seekers. 

Through this training he had several eye-opening moments especially when she went over the resume and those pesky ATS systems. He had never even known that such things existed. 

At the end of the free webinar, he knew that the opportunity to work with me further was the right thing for him. He understood that investing in himself now would make all of the difference for his future career ambition. 

We provided so much help with his resume right away as he was eager to fast track his job search. The proprietary resume template that we provide is tried and true. And with the guidance from the training and our support he finally broke through the barrier in week 3 of the Job Search School.

He started getting calls to interview!  And over the next 2-months, Tony began counting interviews versus resumes. 

He was over the moon that he found himself in talks with several companies, good companies that he had applied at on LinkedIn. He also had got into the habit of researching these companies and zeroing in on who would be his peers and his boss like I teach in the JSS. He connected with these people, began a dialogue, and got the attention he needed to be successful in the job search. 

He entertained 2 great offers in the end. Following my lead helped him to target exactly what he wanted to do and to attain the right compensation he needed. I was glad he shared his progress with me and  for the happy ending in his job search story.  

All it took was an ATS friendly resume and knowing exactly what to include on it. Understanding the ATS helped him to understand the new expectations for the resume.
